Many keen and experienced photographers have grown to adore nude photography after as little as one or two shoots. The human form can be wonderous and continuously changing. Equally, the industry of nude art photography does have its rogues but when you pass the the boundary of lust and wonder, you can be left with a continuing desire to improve the artform of nude photography for the rest of your life.

Of course, there are major hurdles to overcome to enter nude photography, not least of which is the need to practise technique. By its very nature there has to be at least one subject, and the big problem for the photographer here is image. To some, the image of a nude photographer is tied in with the “dirty Macintosh” brigade, with the false wig, dark glasses and dark hat.

Not everyone believes the adage that an erotic photograph, does not have to be nude, and a nude photograph is not necessarily erotic. The biggest challenge is to find a suitable model, and certainly in small town rural backwater areas, it is not the brightest propaganda move to put an advertisement in the Post Office window. It is also suspect to approach someone in the street.

Impeccable credentials help here, an image of a bona fide photographer, with a studio, and a business card with a portfolio. A professionally created business card also helps; a ripped off part of an old envelope invites suspicion. It is not necessary to have a portfolio of nudes, but it is essential as an aid of creating the feeling of trust. It can be very helpful to not tell a prospective model what you do, but show them, and depending on their responses take it from there.

A lot of nude photographers start with a self portrait an this is better than nothing in some cases. There are several other methods that can be used to find people to model. Your first option is to hire professional (glamour) models. That can be expensive, and they’re not often familiar with that type of work. The second option is to hire amateur models, or perhaps even nude still life models, the problem here is that the latter will have no inhibitions taking their clothes off, and may be able to sit still and hold a specific pose for long periods of time, however they may not be the best models to animate themselves. The third option is not to pay a model at all, but find someone with a vested interest in making a portfolio work. Whilst thinking about this matter during the research for this article it occurred to me, that the ideal person, would be someone who would be prepared to model in exchange for a portfolio, or other photographic service. In other words, a model who has a reason to make the session work will undoubtedly put more effort into overcoming any technical difficulties. Perhaps you know someone who is pregnant who might want to model in exchange for the photos.

Secondly that type of model will produce better results, than some eighteen year olds with a perfect body and a bad attitude. A personal model with enthusiasm to explore different perspectives and techniques has to produce better results than a wooden, but perfect doll. It does not alter the fact that your model must be at peace with the thought of nude modelling as a whole, but a sensitive relationship with the photographer will work wonders here. The rules are no different for a photographer here than a portrait photographer, he or she must first have self confidence. If you cannot get that across to your model he or she will be reluctant to give it their best shot.

This type of photography is striving for a look that is natural, and even has a look that it has not been posed for at all. Comfort is essential not just physical comfort though that is important, but mental comfort, the model must be able to understand the concept behind what you are trying to do so that she can co-operate. You have to take the time to explain the techniques of flattering compositions, but equally the model has to work on being fluid and graceful in these motions.

A good relationship with your model built on confidence is essential when you come to evaluate and criticise the work. Your first session will create the tone for future work, but that is when a model will be her most nervous, a way of getting over this barrier might be to ask her to come accompanied, and that may make for a lighter more relaxed session.

Working with the same model over a number of sessions builds up a rapport, and helps the model learn what works in the images, and what doesn’t. She has to be able to see the completed image, before this is really possible. As the model becomes more familiar with how you work and experiences the crucial processes of making an image, the model becomes better at generating poses which work for you, and on the whole, the number of successful images increases.

The locations for this type of photography is not important in terms of the finished image, but it needs to be a little circumspect, or you have to take along a person who watches for stray wanderers if it is outdoors. Lighting normally seems to be better if it is natural, but a single candle can be effective particularly with the use of an older model.

It is important to think ahead before this type of assignment and instruct a model to wear loose clothing and possibly no underwear as strap marks into the skin can take a long time to subside and will ruin the final shots.

Once you have managed to break into this type of work there are many stock libraries that specialise in this type of work.

Cable vs. Satellite TV — Which is Best?
by: Brian Stevens

The move is on. Last year millions of Americans switched from cable TV to satellite TV.

Why? When you compare satellite TV to cable TV you’ll discover the main reasons are cost, picture quality, program choices, and customer satisfaction.

Let’s check out the differences …

Cable vs. Satellite TV Fees

Cable TV fees across the country average $39.99 per month. In our area the cost for cable TV is $37.30 a month for 64 channels, plus $10.95 a month to add digital channels. Installation in one room is $39.95, plus $9.95 for each additional room.

Satellite TV fees from Dish Network are $31.99 per month for 60 channels, while DirecTV charges $41.99 per month for 115 channels. Both satellite TV providers currently offer free satellite TV equipment and free installation in up to four rooms.

Cable vs. Satellite TV Programming

Cable TV in most areas offers almost as many channels as satellite TV, and is broadcast in analog (over-the-air) format. If you want to have digital picture and sound you’ll have to pay an additional fee, usually $10 to $15 a month.

Satellite TV offers more channels than cable TV (more than 250 channels), and more HDTV (high definition TV) programming. All satellite TV channels are broadcast in digital format for the highest quality picture and sound.

Cable vs. Satellite TV Equipment

With cable you only need cable boxes that connect the incoming cable line to your televisions. There is usually no charge or rental fees for cable boxes, however, If you want a digital video recorder, you’ll have to pay an extra fee.

With satellite TV you need a satellite TV dish and TV receivers. Both Dish Network and DirecTV offer that equipment, plus installation, for free. Dish Network will give you a DVR (digital video recording) receiver or an HDTV receiver at no charge, while DirecTV charges $49.99 for DVR receivers and $299 for HDTV receivers.

Cable and Satellite TV Reliability and Customer Satisfaction

Cable TV outages average 3% to 5% per year. J.D. Powers and Associates ranks cable companies as good to poor in customer satisfaction.

Satellite TV outages average about 1%. J.D. Power and Associates has ranked the two satellite TV providers — Dish Network and DirecTV — higher in customer satisfaction than any of the cable TV companies for the last five years

The Bottom Line

If you only watch a couple of shows a week, and you live in an area where you can’t get over-the-air TV and cable TV costs less than $20 per month, then cable may be your best option.

If, on the other hand, you want the biggest variety of shows, movies, sports, and news for the least amount of money … you want to watch your all your shows in digital video and sound … and you want the option of watching them in HD format and recording them on a DVR receiver, then satellite TV is what you’re looking for.

by: Stephanie Roberts

Nature loves clutter. Just think of all the stuff that drops from trees, washes in on the tide, or is blown by the wind into your backyard. Birds molt, animals shed, snakes slither out of their skin, and they all just leave it lying there to rot into the earth. Follow any two-year-old around for a day and you’ll see that we’re not much better.

Living in clutter does not mean that you are a slob or an undisciplined failure. It means that you are human, and your origins are showing. Way, way back in the farthest branches of your family tree, your ancient ancestors lived a somewhat more hand-to-mouth existence than we do. Stocking up was a smart thing to do when the antelope might not roam your way again for a while, and surviving a cold winter depended on how big a stash of firewood and dried berries you had in the back of the cave.

The urge to acquire is instinctive and completely normal. But the kinds of circumstances that could lead primitive man to use up the provisions he’d stashed away are no longer much of a threat to us. I am a big fan of Costco, eBay, and 24-hour convenience stores, but we don’t really need them, and the effect on our closets and garages (not to mention our waistlines!) has been catastrophic.

There seems to be an agreement in our culture that life was “simpler” back whenever. Yearning for simplicity makes us believe that our clutter is against the way things should be. What was different in the past was they didn’t have credit cards, mail order catalogs, and the Internet. Most people only bought what they needed and could afford. When was the last time any of us did that?

In the span of just a few generations the cost of goods has gone down dramatically due to mass production. Take a moment to think about how much a basic T-shirt would cost if it were knitted and stitched by hand. How many would you own then? What if you had to make it yourself? Would you be so ready to think you need another one in a slightly different color or cut, or maybe with a little Lycra in it?

A common lament about contemporary social norms bemoans the scattering of the nuclear family, the lack of a sense of community, and the loss of spirituality in daily life. We feel disconnected, stressed, empty, and we have been trained by mass media since early childhood that having more things will make us feel better. At some point someone told us “you can’t buy happiness,” but we didn’t listen, because everyone likes new toys and buying things makes us feel secure, which is almost as good as feeling happy.

So we shop and shop and buy more things for our homes (and our cars, and our cell phones) until we’re drowning in stuff. And then we shop for things to help us manage the other things and get them organized and neatly stored. Usually all that results from this is an over-abundance of misused, unused, or wrong-sized containers that metastasize into their own variety of clutter.

Combine a new “pre-approved” credit card offer in the mailbox every week, buy-in-bulk warehouse stores, easy internet shopping, and cable shopping networks beaming bargains into your television set 24 hours a day with the hard-wired delusion that giving in to these temptations is a good idea, and our once life-preserving impulse to stock up goes into overdrive. The problem isn’t that we are completely lacking in judgment or self-discipline. The problem is that the primal parts of our brains, where the compulsion to stock up while it’s available resides, is not programmed for a world in which more than we could ever possibly need will still be there tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that.

Once we recognize this, it becomes possible to acknowledge the instinctive urge to acquire and to use the more rational parts of our brains to remember that although we live in the midst of the greatest availability of consumer goods ever known in the history of mankind, lucky us: we don’t need to buy it all today.

Conquering clutter happens in small increments on a day-by-day basis, not in one great to-the-death campaign. It starts with recognizing that clutter flows into our lives every day. Take a moment to think about everything that came to your home or office in the mail this past week. And the things you brought home from the store. And the library books, videos, and DVDs rented (and that will need to be returned in a few days or weeks, another task made more difficult by clutter).

If you have school-age children, you may feel like you need a bulldozer to deal with all the papers and projects that arrive home with them every day. Not to mention the happy meal toys. Then there are the take-out food flyers slid under your door, the lawn-service brochure stuck in your mailbox, the sale inserts from Safeway and Home Depot that sneak in with the newspaper.

The prospect of dealing with your existing clutter is exhausting enough. When you think about the fact that the incoming flow of clutter is not going to stop you may feel an overwhelming urge to just lie down on the floor and admit defeat — assuming you can find a large-enough area of uncluttered carpet to occupy.

Don’t give up before you start! That feeling of overwhelm can actually become the energy source that propels you to get out of this mess and stay out of it. When you feel overwhelmed, allow yourself to be with that feeling and explore it. Hidden beneath the fatigue and despair is a deep desire to be free, to become the highest expression of your true self, to live your dreams and share your unique talents with the world. Tap into that desire, and you will have the energy you need to conquer your clutter.

The secret is to give up on the misguided notion that you can do it all at once in one massive effort. Accept that it took time for all this mess to accumulate, and it will take time to winnow it out. Instead of waiting until you have the time and energy to begin, start now. Begin slowly. Proceed gently. Tackle one small area at a time. The clutter will dwindle and your energy will grow. You will one day triumph over the mess. You will live in a tidy and organized space. You will fall back in love with your home, and incoming clutter will be powerless in the face of your conscious, caring attention to your physical environment.

After enduring the long hard winter months the summer is now here and many landscaping companies are thinking about launching a variety of marketing campaigns to ensure that they get a strong foothold in the market. You too will need to start off this summer season with a bang and you will no doubt be itching to take advantage of the summer weather and get your business noticed as much as possible to ensure you make the most out of the season.

One of the best marketing methods in use today for landscaping companies is flyer printing and distribution. This marketing solution is a highly effective strategy that can also be easily implemented to the Landscaping Business. Providing you develop a complete marketing plan and pay careful attention to design, printing and distribution of your flyers equally you will find that this marketing method is not only highly effective but also highly economical.

Remember to include bright summer colors in your lawn service flyer design to captivate your potential customers in the spirit of summer. Everyone wants their own dream garden with careful borders, vibrant flowers, clean cut grass and the aroma of mint or lavender in the air. Of course, they also don’t want to have to deal with any weeds, any grass cutting, or any general tending and more often than not they really don’t have the time for that. Your flyer can appeal to potential regular customers who need constant care for their garden and one time only customers who want to see their garden dream turned into a reality with a full garden landscaping project. Summer is the perfect time to do this as more people look at their garden in a positive light and think about what it could be if they only had the time and the know how.

Many of these potential customers however, will not come to your business to seek out your services. Most of these people will not take the time out to indulge in their garden landscaping needs unless prompted. This is where flyer printing services can really help you to excel in your business. Advertising with lawn service flyers and direct mail distribution ensures everyone in your local working area is introduced to your business. You don’t have to wait around hoping they will find the time to actively seek you or even your competitors out. You can deliver what they need right to their doorstep and once they see what you have to offer them they are much more likely to give you a call and request your services.

To help boost the selling power of your landscaping flyers, make sure your flyer design incorporates the ideas of graphical balance, summer and gardens, call to action strategies and also appeals to your target audience for your business. Including limited offers and introductory or seasonal rates for your services will not only help you to stand out above the competition but will also provide a sense of urgency to the client who will therefore be much more willing and quick to respond.

Getting off to a good start in the lawn care industry, or any other business for that matter involves getting to know as much as you can about the customers that you will be targeting.

Market research is essential. Below is a step-by-step plan that you can use to meet your customers, learn about them and get close to them before you start a lawn mowing business.

Research potential Customers

Firstly you should decide on the area that you will be targeting and then go for some long walks around the streets within your chosen area. This gives you a chance to look at the state of the lawns of the households in your chosen area and some chances to try to strike up conversations with people living in the street who may happen to be outside in their yards or on their driveways.

You should carry a clip board with some customer survey forms and when you do manage to have conversations with people try to make notes after each discussion. Try to find out which lawn service provider is currently mowing their lawns, if they are satisfied with their price and service and if they would consider changing to a new lawn service provider. You can also ask for their contact details and permission to contact them once you have started your business.

Depending on the area where you live you can try a door knocking approach but be careful as some areas have regulations that disallow unsolicited door-to-door calls.

Research your Competitors

It is also necessary to do some research to learn about your competitors. Call them and try to find out as much as you can about their prices, services and the way they run their lawn business in general. By taking it one step further and inviting them to come to your own property and give you a quote for your lawn you can then see their whole sales process in action.

Taking the time to do market research before starting your lawn mowing business reduces risk, helps you to meet prospective customers and to analyze the services of your competitors. Market research is crucial if you want to start your lawn mowing business off in the right direction.

Why Asking For Help Makes Military Wives Stronger
by: Sarah Smiley

There are two things I hate doing: the lawn and the trash. When counting down the days until homecoming, some women choose to track paydays, school days, or Mondays. Me? I always counted trash days. “Just 12 more times of taking out the trash,” I’d yell across the street to my neighbor as I rolled the can to the curb.

And when the cruise (my husband’s first in 2001) was extended, not a neighbor was spared my ranting and raving over having to take out the trash “yet another two weeks!” Each time I rolled the green, heavy bin down the driveway, I considered it one of the most intolerable jobs of a Navy wife.

That same deployment my front yard was invaded with fire ants, crab grass, and some type of crepe myrtle fungus, which was never identified. I let these problems go “unnoticed,” believing they might magically disappear and I wouldn’t have to actually care for the grass myself.

And the yard problems did go away. My sympathetic neighbor next door became my complimentary yardman. (Although, I’ve always wondered if it was true charity which prompted him to mow my grass each week, or rather a fear that the chinch bugs would crawl over to his side.) Either way, I had free lawn service.

Occasionally, a neighbor would take pity on me and replace my trashcan back to the side of the house after the garbage men were done with it.

And once, when I had maggots in the bottom of the bin, a few men from the neighborhood were nice enough to dispose of them and Clorox the trashcan, and not tell me about the whole incident until a year later (they knew better).

“It takes a village to do Sarah’s trash,” one neighbor joked.

And sometimes it also took a village to change Sarah’s flat tire, to kill big bugs in her living room, and to fetch her son’s toy airplane that landed on the roof.

Towards the end of that deployment, I began to feel guilty. I wondered if I wasn’t being strong enough and if I shouldn’t take my title of “Navy dependent” so literally as to mean I was, well, dependent.

“Don’t be silly,” my neighbors would say. “We’re glad to help.” More than hanging a flag from their door, they said helping a Navy family made them feel like they were doing their part.

Surprisingly (to me), despite doing my lawn every week and occasionally my trash and home repairs, these neighbors often told me I was far from “dependent.”

Instead of focusing on the things I was not doing myself, my neighbors were in awe at the things I had done alone. And most of these things (caring for sick babies in the middle of the night, dealing with emergencies), I had done without my realizing it or giving myself credit.

I learned that being strong and independent doesn’t necessarily mean doing it all.

Most things in life do require a “village,” and there are few people who can do everything themselves. It’s OK to ask for and accept help. Most people are eager to give it.

We all have our limits (apparently mine are maggots and chinch bugs), and it’s best if we know them. That’s the true makings of a strong military wife.

What should you do if you have a lifeless tree on your property? Consider your options. Although trees lose most of their aesthetic appeal when they die, they provide a beneficial afterlife. Dead trees are a source of food, shelter and home sites for wildlife. They may also be used for firewood, garden projects or building material. When you discover a dead tree, decide if it should be removed and what you want to do with the remaining materials.

Creating a Wildlife Tree – By leaving a portion of a lifeless tree standing (at least 15 feet is recommended), you can encourage a natural wildlife habitat, maintain safety and create a spectacular observatory for you and your children. As wood softens, insects residing in trees become accessible to birds. Woodpeckers excavate food and inadvertently create nesting sites for other birds and small woodland creatures. If you want to decorate your standing observatory, plant vines that will climb and cover the trunk, such as Virginia creeper or Climbing hydrangea vine. Accessorize by hanging flower baskets or feeders. You may also rest logs horizontally on the ground along a walkway, in a garden or near a pond. Make a narrow bed around the edges and plant wildflowers to attract butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial insects. These and other plant species will eagerly take root on and around your nutrient-rich log.

Preserving a Piece of History – A very creative way to discard a lifeless tree is to use the wood for building projects. That’s exactly what George Mohrmann encourages with his company, Sawmill-On-Wheels. He feels that many people are looking for a productive way to use downed logs or preserve memories of their personal history with a particular tree. Sawmill-On-Wheels and similar companies throughout the northeast turn what was once considered cumbersome waste, downed logs, into valuable hardwood and softwood that can be used in a variety of projects and they do it right on your property! “A fully hydraulic, completely transportable saw allows me to produce just the type and size of wood needed for a particular project and often in sizes that are hard to find elsewhere,” says Mohrmann. Some of the work he has seen includes tree houses, fireplace mantles, giant beams, furniture, benches, carvings and matching old wood for restoration projects. How would you preserve your piece of history?

The removal of a tree does not mark the end its usefulness or your enjoyment of its beauty. In fact, it can be a very rewarding experience. You will preserve precious memories and form new ones by creating a unique afterlife for your old friends. For a complimentary consultation of your landscape, evaluation of a particular tree or hazard inspection, consult your arborist.

Advancements In Artificial Turf

Artificial turf has come a long way since it’s invention in the 50’s, what was at first quite an aesthetically unappealing surface has become a great alternative to grass. Needing almost no maintenance, artificial grass turf stays green all year round (or blue, black, yellow or orange if you really want to go crazy) and can cost much less in the long run than ‘real’ turf. Another big plus is that artifical turf doesn’t need weeding, meaning more time enjoying it and less taking care of it. Modern artificial turf often looks so real as to be indistinguishable from a real grass surface. For those that want a perfect looking lawn, but would still like to use it without worry about fading and patchy grass, artifical turf is a great alternative rapidly increasing in popularity. Artificial grass turf can not only be a greener option with regards to color, but also in terms of the environment.

This may seem an odd thing to say at first, how can artificial turf be better ecologically than natural grass? Well, grass may be natural, but lawns certainly aren’t. Artifical turf requires no weed killers or pesticides unlike grass, meaning less chemicals being released into the environment. Also an artificial grass turf lawn will never need cutting, so emissions and power use from lawn mowers doesn’t exist. Drinkable water is the most precious resource on the planet, and your artificial lawn won’t drink a drop of it. Obviously there are more emissions in the production of artificial turf than with real turf, but this is more than compensated for over the life of your lawn.

If you live in a location that receives little rain fall or is unsuitable for real grass for other reasons such as soil quality, then artificial grass turf can offer you all you want from your garden with none of the hassle. Artifical turf was originally mocked when used by football clubs and other sports teams on their grounds, but even they have started to come back around to the idea since the development of artificial turf has come so far in recent years.

Artificial turf now uses a combination of laminated fibers and coils, often with a ‘bed’ of recycled rubber to provide a softer surface, simulating an effect much closer to that of grass. Visually the change in modern artificial turf when compared to its predecessors is incredible. An artificial grass turf lawn can be incredibly difficult to tell from the real
1000
thing, except of course for the absence of burnt patches, bald patches and unsightly weeds. The lifespan of an artificial lawn can be anywhere up to 35 years, that’s 35 years of weekends free from mowing or weeding. Maybe you could spend that extra time relaxing in the garden rather than working in it. Do you have roof space that you’d like to use as a garden? Then go for it. No matter what the project, artificial turf has a good chance of being able to meet your needs.

Artificial Grass – Five Main Advantages

At one point of time, those people who wanted substitutes for natural grass had very limited choices. They used to either install huge rock gardens in their yard, or they used artificial grass. Some years back, the only kind of artificial grass that was obtainable was the fake-looking grass that you will get at the neighboring mini-putt, but the situation is not the same anymore. The huge variety of artificial grass installation alternatives is just one of the reasons why people go for substitutes to natural grass.
Most of all, synthetic grass will spare you a great deal of time and effort. With real grass, one must put in seemingly endless hours to mow it, rake it, and weed it, if one wants one’s lawn to look well cared for and attractive.
On a comparative spectrum of maintenance for lawns, rating the requirement for different options of grass brings things into perspective. Artificial grass rates at the minimal end. Keeping it clean requires a small amount of time in comparison to the maintenance required by natural grass. Synthetic lawns are known favorites of senior citizens and people who own vacation homes because of the amount of maintenance.
Another benefit is the fake grass which is well for the environment. To have a wonderful lawn which looks natural, you need to water it on a regular basis. Also adding, you will need to use a number of pesticides and herbicides with fertilizers so that you can handle the insects, faded patches and ugly weeds. Because of a water shortage and the chemicals which are not good for the water systems and wildlife. By you using replacing things to natural grass, these things in which cause harm can be eliminated.
Artificial grass is in fact a cost-effective creation. You may accept to absorb some money for the antecedent installation. But afterwards that if the backyard is maintained properly you won’t accept to absorb abundant money. By opting for an alternative, you can annihilate all backyard affliction expenses.
The greatest positive factor in installing artificial grass is the ability to avoid putting in all that time and effort and still be able to maintain an lovely, real-looking lawn. Synthetic grass doesn’t fade and always displays the same freshness all year round, which enhances the appearance of your home. Besides, your beauti
1000
ful lawn will be entirely impervious to attacks by any insects that live in your neighborhood.

There was a time when those individuals who preferred to take advantage of the alternatives to actual grass had little to choose from. It became a choice between a backyard rock garden and a patch of artificial grass. When you have synthetic grass, you only have to be concerned with a bit of upkeep, like taking trash off your lawn.

The Basics of Starting a Lawn Business & Landscape Business
by: Kevin Whiteside

My goal is to bring lawn and landscape professionals great information, advice, tips, and strategies. I love this business and want to see others learn, grow, and be successful.

You have picked a great field to be in. The SERVICE Industry. The service industry can survive in tough times alot easier while other business such as retail have rent, employees, or big expenses.

You can start a lawn & landscape company with little capital, but you must become an expert in your business as your customer will turn to you for advice.

Read as many books on this industry as you can get your hands on. Just 1 idea from a book could make or save or you thousands of dollars.

I recommend starting with good landscaping books that describe

all the plants, shrubs, and trees
tells the environment they can live in
how to care for them

Plus, you should read basic business books. I majored in sales and marketing in college and still learn something valuable in every sales and marketing book I read.

I have seen many owners of companies have great service and great employee management, but neglect the marketing side. After your business gets going marketing should consume about 90% of the business.

If you are just starting, don’t go after commercial accounts until later. One reason is commercial accounts pay 30 -60 days out. You can’t afford to keep your money tied up that long. Residential accounts pay immediately. Plus, if you go after commercial accounts early you may greatly underbid or realize you don’t have the equipment to handle it.

I recommend not being the lowest price in the neighborhood. You want to sell yourself and service. Professionalism is ALWAYS key. Look neat and wear a uniform. Don’t get caught off guard without business cards, fliers, and a clipboard.

If a potential customer needs an estimate always try and meet with him face to face. This is better because of 2 reasons:

You have a much better chance of getting the account
If you get the account, try and up sell additional services.

This is much better than looking at a potential clients lawn when he is not home and calling him with a quote. You have failed to make a connection with him and all he knows is a voice.

I can guarantee that if you do a great job, maintain professionalism, and market your services you will eventually have all the work you can handle.

Best of Luck

Can Robotic Lawnmowers Save the World or at Least You Money?
by: Kerry Clabaugh

It is common knowledge that gas powered lawn mowers are serious environmental polluters. It is estimated that 1 hour of lawn mower use equals driving an SUV 100 miles. I have read that lawnmowers contribute up to 5% of the nation’s pollution. Even more alarming comparisons and statistics can be found on the internet.

Even if you are not an environmentalist, the price of gas will definitely make you a conservationist. Gas prices continue to climb. Personally, going to the gas station with my little gas can is not a trip of leisure, it has always been a chore.

Changing the oil, air filter, and regular maintenance is not what I consider an enjoyable event. John Deere charged me $129 one year to do all that, so it became a semi-annual day of bonding between me and ol’ JD.

We hired a lawn service for a year. He did a good job but his helpers made us uneasy. They seemed friendly whether they could speak English or not. One of the problems we had was we travel a good deal and we just didn’t feel comfortable having strangers running around our yard knowing we were gone. There are enough elements of risk out there without inviting it to our home.

One day on the internet I came across an article for automatic lawnmowers. We ordered it with a healthy serving of skepticism since our robotic vacuum cleaner needed to be replaced more often that our landscaper’s hired hands.

It has exceeded out expectations. So much so we decided to start selling them. They have proven to be very low maintenance and highly reliable. They do a pretty good job cutting the yard.

Technology has advanced where batteries can now power lawn mowers to do an effective job. They can mow, go back to the charger by them selves, and go back out again on a schedule without any help all season.

My wife and I can now travel freely without the worry of a self-inflicted burglary. We no longer have invited strangers running around our yard, yet we have a nicely cut lawn.

Maintenance? Once a year I change the blades. For those who live in the north the robotic lawn mower needs to be housed in the garage for the winter. Since it is all electric it doesn’t burn any gas or oil. That means no pollutants so we can all breathe easier.

Robotic lawn mowers are also very quiet. They are so quiet that they can be run at night while every one is asleep.

It costs about $7.00 a year in electricity to mow my yard. I used to spend more than that in one trip to fill up the gas container.

The biggest problem that we have is with our neighbors. My goodness they love to come out and watch it work. For me the excitement has long gone and I consider it no more of a novelty than the dishwasher. But for some reason our little robotic lawn mower continues to be the neighborhood star attraction day after day.

Robotic lawn mowers aren’t going to put John Deere or the local landscaper out of business anytime soon, but one day the do-it-yourselfers are going to be the ones that will be the neighborhood oddity.

Many homeowners and property owners simply do not have the time to care for their lawns. That being the case, they will often hire someone to do it for them. That person could be you!

You will need a few things in order to be truly successful in this type of work. The good news is you may already have everything you need. Here is a short list of items you will probably want to have on hand:

Lawn mowers-Riding and push String Cutter-aka Weed Eater Hand tools-Rake, broom, etc Gas Cans Means of transporting your tools and mowers

When you are trying to hustle up some extra money through lawn care, you have to get the word out that you are open for business. You can use word of mouth, which costs nothing, but you can also put a small ad in your local paper.

While most municipalities will not require you to have a business license for this type of part-time work, it is always best to check first. Most business licenses for lawn work are inexpensive and easy to get.

There are two common mistakes people often make when they are trying to hustle up some cash with their lawn care service. The first mistake is they over-bid the job. The second mistake is they under-bid the job.

Before you do anything, you should research the prevailing prices for lawn care work in your area. You can check in the papers or even call a few of those who are currently doing this type of work to get estimates from them.

Once you have a range of prices, you can set your price and have confidence that you are, at least, in the ballpark when it comes to charging for your services.

One of the best ways to ensure that you stay as busy as you want to be is to do good work. People often talk about their lawn care service and will be inclined to recommend you if you are good. When it comes to hustling up some extra cash, word of mouth advertising is priceless.

Most of all, if you think this is the Hustle for you, take action! Today!

Small Engine Projects: Improve Your Lawn Mower Or Golf Cart With Briggs & Stratton

When it comes to small gas-powered engines, Briggs & Stratton offer some of the best engines for your repowering needs. These engines are designed for equipment that really works for you, conveniently replacing the weak or ill-equipped engines that often come with modern equipment. Briggs & Stratton makes it easy to repower your commercial turf vehicles, construction equipment, fire or rescue equipment, farm and ranch equipment, golf and sport vehicles, and even your off-road or marine vehicles.

These engines are not just more powerful than the engines that often come with your commercial equipment. They are also of a higher quality, with the Briggs & Stratton name backing up the engines that they sell. You deserve equipment that works as long and as hard as you do.

When you buy small engines from Briggs & Stratton, you are not just buying a part for a commercial vehicle. You are buying the quality and service that come with the name. Briggs & Stratton employs a driven team with decades of combined experience in utilizing resources to deliver the best power solutions for commercial applications just like yours.

Many engines that come standard with commercial equipment have inherent flaws and older equipment is more likely to possess these troublesome features. Older engines might offer less than desirable power output levels, be less fuel efficient, and produce unnecessary elevated emissions. Replacing these small engines, however, can be both expensive and difficult, especially when it comes to vehicles like golf carts, which are getting harder to find equipped with gas power.

Instead of replacing old, worn out equipment or equipment that is not environmentally friendly, many grounds keepers and golf course managers are turning to engine repowering. With a Briggs & Stratton small engine repowering kit you can replace the engine on your old machine, extending its life at the fraction of the cost of buying a new motor. Briggs & Stratton is constantly researching and testing to ensure that you get the best engines and the latest new developments in engines for your repowering needs. Not only do you get the performance expected from Briggs engines, you will also get the ease and cos
1000
t savings of knowing they are constantly improving their small engine rebuild kits for small engine vehicle owners.

Getting rid of a vehicle or piece of equipment to which you have become accustomed to can be discouraging. A small engine rebuild kit can provide you with a superior machine with the same features and benefits of the original. Installation of these kits is made simple with easy-to-use instructions as well as professionals available through online distribution companies that can answer your questions. The time and energy spent in installing these small engine kits is a fraction of the time and money that would be needed to completely replace your golf cart or mower engine or to buy a new mower altogether.

With a Briggs Stratton kit, you can install a brand new small engine in your equipment and restore it to a better performing condition. You will not just be recharging your old equipment, you will be repowering it.

It is important to do a little market research before you start a lawn care business. Market research will help you to assess the demand for lawn care services in your area and allow you to understand more about the kind of people that are likely to need your services. You will also gain a good understanding of the present state of the market, the businesses currently serving it and the rates that they are charging.

If done correctly, your research will give you a clear idea of the opportunities and risks that you would face if you start a lawn business. You will know what kind of business you need to have to succeed, which services you should offer and how much you should charge for them. Lastly, the results of your research will let you know how to proceed with your marketing.

There are many companies that specialize in doing market research and you could benefit from having access to accurate data that has been researched by professionals. This kind of service is expensive though and considering the size and starting capital of most lawn care startups it is more feasible to put some time and effort into doing your own research.

Here are some questions that you should attempt to answer through your lawn care business market research.

Would a Lawn Care Business do well in my Area?

Before you go ahead with serious research and start to prepare your lawn care business plan you need to know if this kind of business would be sustainable in your area. Consider the local climate and the seasons in your state and drive around taking note of the properties in your area and the yard sizes. Take a quick look online and in the Yellow Pages and try to get an idea of the number of operators that the area is currently sustaining. If other companies are thriving then there is a good chance that you can thrive as well.

Also consider the current state of your local economy. If you are in a small town that has had factory closures and company layoffs then obviously it will not be a great place to start out.

What are the Local Demographics like?

All kinds of people hire lawn care contractors to service their properties. One typical profile of a customer looking for a lawn service company would be a middle aged, white-collar household with a family income of at least $60,000.

It is useful if you can learn a little about the demographics of the market that you are targeting and if they are set to change at all over the next five to ten years. Data from a local census may prove useful for your research.

What are Lawn Care Businesses in my Area Currently Offering?

One crucial part of your research should be phoning your competitors and asking about their services and rates. This gives you a chance to ask lots of questions about their business, the services that they offer and to analyze the way they handle customer enquiries.

Most importantly you can get a good idea of market rates by having some of the existing lawn care operators bid on your lawn or some of the lawns of your friends and family members. By comparing their bids with the lawn sizes you will be able to work out average rates per square foot.

Do I Understand my Local Market?

To really understand the local market you have to get out there and talk to people, both those that currently hire a lawn mowing company and those that do not.

One good idea is to put a questionnaire together and go door to door talking to people about their lawns. Depending on where you live there may be regulations against this kind of unsolicited prospecting so be careful. Walking the area on a fine day and striking up a polite conversation with people who are in their front yards or on their driveways may be one way of doing this without actually having to knock on doors. You could also purchase a database of local people and survey them by phone or mail.

Firstly, try to get a little information about who they are to get an idea of what kind of local people would require lawn care services. It is easier to enquire about personal details such as age bracket and income bracket if you do it via a questionnaire.

You can also find out which lawn care provider is currently doing their lawns, if they are satisfied with their work and the price and if there are any other specific services that they require for their home or yard. Don’t pry too much but you may be able to find out who your competitors are and exactly how much they are charging.

Lastly, it is great to know what kind of advertising local people might respond to. Ask them about the newspapers and magazines that they read or the local radio stations that they listen to.

Get some contact details from them and then when you start your business you can contact them again. Let them know that you have taken their input into account and created the kind of lawn business that you fell would suit people like them.

What about Changes in the Marketplace?

No market remains static so it is important to keep your finger on the pulse of the market on a continual basis.

Once your lawn care business has a good number of accounts you will be able to get an even better understanding of your market through customer feedback. Feedback by the way of occasional conversations with clients as well as via customer feedback forms will allow you to refine your services and marketing even more.

By doing thorough research before you set up a lawn care business you eliminate risk, meet prospective customers and get the information that you need to guide your business in the right direction.

Around where I live the small engine retail and service stores charge $75 an hour to work on lawn mowers and ride-on tractors. Most people can do the necessary basic service themselves and keep their mower running smoothly for years.

We all do it, we get to the end of the grass cutting season, shove the mower or tractor to the back of the shed and forget about it till next Spring. Don’t do that this year, it will cost you money and time to get it back in working order.

What you’ll need: Digital camera, SAE30 oil, wire brush, spray can of black enamel paint, heavy duty gloves, container for used oil, replacement spark plug, (just in case), face mask and cleaning rags.

Drain the fuel tank and let the engine burn the last of it from the carburetor and fuel lines. The fuel in the tanks will partially evaporate over winter leaving a residue, particularly fuels blended with ethanol which will leave a gooey mess, that’s a real pain to clean out especially from the fine jets in the carburetor.

Before doing any further work on your machine, disconnect the spark plug lead. Although electrical interlocks should prevent the engine accidentally starting it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Drain out the old engine oil. For most lawn mowers the drain plug is underneath in the mower deck. For others and lawn tractors the drain plug is at the base of, and on the side of the engine. Be sure to collect the oil in a container to dispose of correctly later, don’t let the oil drain onto the ground. Replace the oil drain plug. Leave the dipstick out to remind you there is no oil in the engine.

Clean dirt and grass off the mower, a small amount of debris in the engine will cause it to seize. Clean dirt from the engine cooling fins, you may have a cover to remove to do this. If this is the first time you are doing your own maintenance, have a digital camera handy to take photos as you work to ensure parts go back correctly. Take as many pictures as you need, use the zoom for close-ups, so as you put things back in place you won’t waste any time figuring things out. Don’t rely on your memory it will let you down!

Clean the deck, for lawn mowers tip the machine on its side, carburetor side up. Use a block of wood to wedge the blade so that it cannot move. Put on a pair of heavy duty garden gloves before removing the blade. Clean debris from the underside of the deck, wire brush and spray with black enamel paint from an auto parts dealer, always use a mask for this job. Painting the underside of the deck will prolong its life. Have a professional sharpen and balance the blade before replacing it. Then turn your mower upright.

Take out the spark plug, wire brush it clean and check the gap, 0.30″ for most. If it’s worn replace it with new. Take the plug to a dealer to ensure you get the correct replacement. Clean and replace carburetor air filter. Fill the engine with SAE30 oil, check manual for quantity required making sure not to over fill, then use the dipstick to check the level, let stand for a few minutes then re-check. Wipe the dipstick to avoid an incorrect reading.

Check the condition of the starter pull cord. If damaged or frayed take the mower to a service dealer for a replacement pull cord. Replacing the cord can be difficult especially if the recoil spring is taken out of its housing and it’s not a task for a beginner. Lubricate the cables and if it’s self-propelled check the belts for wear and damage and replace if needed.

Wipe the machine down and store ready for next Spring and you’ve just saved yourself $100 or more.

MONETIZING TIPS: Offer this simple end or beginning of season service to family, friends, neighbors, church members and seniors clubs. Make up a poster on your PC with eye catching photos from the web. If you have a vehicle to transport machines so much the better. You only need a space in your garage or garden shed and a few simple tools to get started on a nice money-making business. Your camera can be a big help by ensuring you can see exactly how things came apart until you feel confident.

For the sake of your pets and family, please stop using chemical pesticides.

Toxic pesticides are considered an active poison. They are extremely dangerous to your health, your pets health and our environment.

Every year, thousands of domestic pets and wild life lose their lives to the ravaging effects of pesticide poisoning. Most pet lovers also enjoy gardening and the great outdoors. Little do they know what caustic ingredients are in the pesticides that are being sprayed on lawns and green areas. We take for granted that most herbicides used by gardeners or sold in stores are safe. Many name brands such as “Weed n’ Feed” and “Round Up” contain the same deadly cancer causing ingredients that were found in Agent Orange. Another synthetic poison found in these two well known garden products is 2,4-D. It is also the active ingredient found in “Killex.” It can cause loss of reflex in humans along with comas, kidney and liver failure. In dogs it is the number one killer causing malignant lymphomas, a form of cancer.

Sadly, just five percent of pesticides reach their target weeds and garden pest. The rest are absorbed into our earth, targeting our water supplies through a process called run off or simply just dissipates into our air. Major health damage can occur when Toxic Pesticides are absorbed through our skin, swallowed or inhaled. When not applied correctly, pesticides can settle on ponds, pools, children’s toys, pets left outdoors and even drift through open windows settling on our furniture, bedding and even our floors. This deadly poison is often tracked into our homes by our shoes and pets paws.

We all face the continuing problem of toxic by-products through years of pesticide residue that is in our food supply and everyday environment. What we don’t realize is how wide spread pesticide poisoning really is. These caustic chemicals are virtually used in all of our public buildings including our children’s schools and play yards, restaurants, hospitals, hotels and private homes. Pesticide abuse is used in our agriculture and forest areas.

Why are Pets Vulnerable to Pesticide Poisoning?

- Pets spend most of their time close to the ground, this is where pesticide concentration is highest.

- Pets ingest most pesticides while grooming themselves. Any contact with chemicals connect with their fur and paws and is then ingested by the pet.

- Pets spend more time outside and play in heavily treated areas.

- Pets have higher absorption rates than human systems. Animals may be more sensitive and easily poisoned by conditions deemed safe to people.

Signs of Pesticide Poisoning In Pets

- Excessive drooling and foaming at the mouth.

- Loss of thirst and appetite.

- Vomiting or diarrhea.

- Immune function decline.

- Convulsions and disorientation.

- Birds and fish die due to toxic runoff in our water supply.

- Feline thyroid disease.

- Dogs contract cancer (malignant lymphoma)

What Can We Do To Stop Pesticide Poisoning?

- Adapt an alternative “green” solution for pest control.

- Enjoy your weeds and bugs. They are part of nature.

- Educate yourself about pesticides used by your HOA, Lawn Service and immediate neighbors.

- Do not allow your pets to drink from ponds or outside water sources – always keep fresh, clean water readily available.

- Leash your pets, allowing them to run free is not a good idea.

- Bathe and brush your pets often.

- Wash down your outdoor living area.

- Think Eco-conscious when dealing with your environment.

Protect yourself and your pets from synthetic pesticides by being an educated consumer and willing activist in our Eco-system.
